Dino Sporting Club of Abeokuta stunned TCC League champions Beyond Limits 2-1 to win their maiden TCC Cup title at the Remo Stars stadium on Monday.
In what was a carnival-like atmosphere at the magnificent facility, Dino SC became only the first team to beat Ajibolade Olumide’s men twice in a single TCC League campaign.
The intentions of the sides were clear from the set go, with them taking turns to size each other up in the opening exchanges in front of the decent amount of fans at the venue.
Like they have done all season, it was BYL who had the first attempt on goal but it was well smothered by Dino goalie Gideon Ede. At the other end, the returning Elijah Adekunle headed directly into the arms of BYL goalkeeper Okechukwu Olisa just before the 15th-minute mark.
However, against the run of play, Dino went ahead to take the lead after a swift counter-attack which was finished off by Okiemute Adagharagba from Fabian Sylvanus’ miscue shot in the 23rd minute.
Meanwhile, BYL continued to find it difficult to make their chances upfront count, while Dino stayed resilient in their defensive duties led by captain Afolayan Peters.
Just three minutes after the break, Dino made it two through Elijah as he reacted quickly to smash home a loose ball in the area.
From that moment on, it became one way traffic as BYL upped the tempo and were desperately looking for a way back into the game. Shola Ogundana, Ahmed Lanre and Onyebuchi Obasi all missed good goalscoring chances in the final half hour.
BYL Substitute Farouq Ogundare’s fierce drive from outside the area also struck the foot of the post in the dying embers of the game. However, Obasi fired home from inside the area on the 90th minute mark to set up a nervy finish to the game.
Despite the late foray of attacks from the Sky Blue Stars, Godwin Gibson’s men held on for their first TCC Cup triumph, while BYL suffered their second successive final heartbreak.
