After their loss to Imperial on Matchweek 5, Gbagada returned to winning ways with a win over Broad City.
The Blue Eagles could not afford to drop any points in the hot chase for the top spot on the log. Coach Akinyelu’s players started the game on the front foot, with some good pressing and forward plays. While Joshua Blessing could not place his shot on target in the 11th minute, Wasiu Balogun found the back of the net in the 13th with a well-placed shot from outside the area.
He almost made it two as he aimed at the Iganmu goalie. His effort, however, was too weak. Balogun and Akibu, in the 38th minute, were again on hand to threaten the Broad City goal area. The solid defense of the home side came out on top, keeping the Eagles at bay, at least for the rest of the half.
Gbagada started the second as they ended the first; more forays into the box, more attempts on goal. On the other hand, Broad City gradually found their feet in the game as they found their momentum. They would get their goal in the 66th minute, forcing Gbagada to rue their missed chances.
Desperate to get all three points from this one, Gbagada regained the lead just two minutes after conceding. An unmarked Ademola Akibu was on hand to send a well-placed header past Victor Ologbon in goal. Smelling blood, Broad City charged forward, seeking yet another goal. Gbagada goalie, Kabiru was forced into making a big save in the 72nd minute as the home side fired from close range.
They would try again from a set-piece situation in front of the 18-yard area. However, the attempt was sky-rocketed. After a tense last few minutes of the game, the referee blew the final whistle to hand Gbagada another win away from home.
