Imperial FC edged Atlantic Business 2-1 in Ijebu Ode on Friday, to book their place in the semifinal of the TCC Cup this season.
The less fancied Imperial, going by last season’s performance, were not given a chance to progress from the group by many but they surprised everyone to finish top despite suffering an opening day loss to Gbagada FC.
After a goalless first half, Imperial went in front through Temitope Aduralegbe’s goal in the 51st minute but eight minutes later Adiro Olayinka’s boys were back on level terms as Sulaimon Onafowokan finished expertly in the area.
Atlantic couldn’t produce consistent performances over the previous three cup games and they were punished severely by the other teams in Group A.
Both coaches made changes, with coach Adedeji Ayeoba going for the jugular with the semi final ticket looking to elude them. However, there was still time for drama late in the game.
Imperial Captain Chidera Ezeno converted from the spot 12 minutes from time to hand the young side a lifeline. Similarly, Rilwan Oniyide marshalled the defence to ensure they preserve the lead and claim a previous win.
Atlantic finished bottom and without a win, while Imperial miraculously finished top of the pile in group A with nine points.
