Sporting Lagos Climb to Top Spot with Slim Win

Sporting Lagos could only manage a single goal as they defeated Atlantic Business.

The last time both sides met, six goals were scored. This time around, it started on a cagey note, a total contrast to their last meeting six months ago.

The visitors, on their part, dominated the early proceedings, moving the ball around smoothly in the midfield. A few times, they made cameo appearances in their opponents’ box but could not maximize their opportunities.

They were clearly the better side of the half. However, Coach Shola’s men were let down by incomplete passes and miscommunication between players. The hosts seemed comfortable to take the defensive position as they offered little going forward.

But they could only hold on for so long as Sporting Lagos got their breakthrough in the 27th minute.

After a give-and-take move, Adewale Quadri burst through the midfield and down the right flank of the pitch. Like a winger, he raced with the ball towards goal, outpacing all Atlantic Business players. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, he hit the ball hard and sent it home to put the visitors ahead.

The hosts, try as they could, had no answers for all of Sporting’s questions. Aside from a weak shot on goal five minutes after the opener, Coach Warri’s men were second best.

A weak left flank and an attack far from being sharp made sure that the hosts posed no serious threat for the remainder of the game. While the visitors could have extended their lead, the slim lead was enough to get them the maximum points needed as they climbed to the summit of the table.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Quadri Adewale (Sporting Lagos)

The dynamic defender doused all threats on his flank with his mazy runs and intelligent positioning. His goal was the cherry on the cake.
