League newcomers, VOE FA, registered their first win in style, pulling off a remarkable comeback to stun Sporting Lagos 4-3.
The Lagosians, after scoring four in their first game, scored in the second minute of the game. John Lucky was again on hand to score for Coach Shola’s side as Sporting Lagos took the lead.
Not willing to lose sight of their opponents, VOE drew level in the 12th minute as Bashir found space in the hosts’ 18-yard area and fired home from close range. The visitors however found themselves behind again in the 16th minute no thanks to an error from their goalkeeper.
Olaoye Olayinka failed to deal with Solomon’s freekick, thereby allowing the ball to slip in between his legs and into the net. But VOE, despite the error, did not lose faith and drew level again in the 36th minute.
Abdulraheem Taiwo rose highest, connected well with a cross from the left, and nodded the ball past Kufre in goal to score VOE’s second.
The goal-scoring jamboree continued in the second half, as the clash intensified.
Sporting Lagos pulled ahead with yet another John Lucky goal. The striker has now scored four goals in two league games. Their celebration and lead was however short in the 49th minute as Abdulraheem Taiwo shrugged off a defender and bundled the ball into the net.
Six goals scored. Three apiece for each team. And the second half had barely begun.
VOE would however have the final say in the clash. An unmarked David Ibbe stabbed home the seventh goal of the game in the 52nd minute – the goal that would seal the win for the visitors.
For the Lagosians, the defeat is another wake-up call to a shaky defense that needs attention. For VOE, their first-ever TCC League win sends a clear message: They’re here for business.
