Sporting Lagos was founded in 2022 by Shola Akinlade – Co-Founder/CEO of Paystack, Nigeria’s leading online payment platform – with the quest to create a successful football entity that will last for generations. It is a Lagos-based football club in the Nigerian National League (NNL), the second division of Nigerian club football, with ambitions to be promoted to the First Division (NPFL).
The club’s first official match was played on February 13, a 1-1 draw against Go Round FC at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. This marked the start of the club’s first campaign in the NNL, and the team managed a 10th-place finish on the final standings.
Sporting Lagos U19 is a youth team of the club and was established in September 2022. The objective of the team is to help groom the next generation of Nigeria’s football talent. The youth team is set to play in the 2022/23 Creative Championship season as their first campaign.
By doing so, they will become the 12th team to play in the private league since its inception in 2020.
