Gbagada Pip Broad City to Win Battle for Fourth Place

Gbagada endured a nervy finish, holding off a Broad City come-back on their way to a 2-1 victory.

It started as an end-to-end affair, with both sides making attempts. But it was the visitors who had the breakthrough in the 13th minute. Itunu Olushola was put through on goal on the right. His shot, initially blocked by Isaac in goal, was parried into Semiu Fagbayi’s path. The winger tapped home from close range to put Gbagada in front.

25 minutes later, the visitors doubled their lead with Taiwo Akire getting on the scoresheet. When the referee called time on the half, the Blue Eagles were cruising.

The hosts had plans for a come-back in the second half. And a 55th-minute goal was good enough to set that in motion.

Istifanus started off the move with a pass from the right that found Jeremiah Christopher on the edge of the box. The striker’s short pass to the right found an onrushing Chidubem who was already through on goal. But instead of shooting, the midfielder’s cutback pass found the one who started the move, Istifanus. The right-back’s goal halved the deficit and set the game on edge.

Coach Akinyelu’s men were however resolute in their defending, warding off any chances of a second Broad City goal. They would go on to win the game and move above Broad City into fourth spot.
