Reigning champions, Real Sapphire, needed a late goal to secure a first league victory since the 2nd of November.
The hosts got off the block with a quick goal in the 9th minute, setting the pace of the game. Xavier’s tap-in from close range was the end product of a well-worked team move as the league champions raced into the lead.
But that lead only lasted six minutes.
David Aremo, from 25 yards out, squeezed a free-kick past Godwin to restore parity for the visitors.
The scores would remain level for the longest as both sides seemed destined to settle for a draw. All of that however changed in the 85th minute. Real Sapphire won a free-kick around the area where Imperial from earlier. Promise Maduabuchi stepped up and fired home with a bullet shot, to the frenzy of the home fans and the disappointment of the visitors.
Promise’s goal made all the difference in the end as it earned Real Sapphire a fourth home win of the campaign.
