There would be no fourth win in a row for Sporting Lagos as they fell to a defeat at Imperial.
The clash which began with end-to-end action, saw both sides creating early chances. It was, however, the hosts who broke the deadlock in the 25th minute through Sabastine Thompson.
Sporting Lagos’ failure to clear their lines saw the ball fall kindly to an onrushing Thompson. In the 18-yard area, he unleashed a left-footed strike which Gaffar flat-footed in goal, giving Imperial the early lead.
Gaffar was the busier of the two goalkeepers as he was again called into action five minutes from time. This time however, he tipped the Elijah Kingsely lobbed shot over the bar at full stretch.
In the 2nd half, Imperial dominated possession and continued to create chances.Ibrahim Abubakar’s sending off in the 57th minute meant Sporting Lagos remained on the backfoot for the remainder of the game.
Seven minutes from time, with a gaping hole in its defense line, Sporting Lagos conceded another Imperial chance. But this time, Ephraim, in a bid to stop the attacking player, poked the ball past his own goalie for Imperial’s second.
Deserving victory for an Imperial side, the first team to shut out Sporting Lagos this season.
