Sporting Lagos entered the 2024/2025 TCC season as one of the major contenders for a trophy. After falling short in the cup final in May 2024, the Lagosians showed promise. All that was missing was a trophy.
First Half of the Season
The Lagos-based side kicked off their league campaign the best way possible – a comprehensive 4-0 victory against Dannaz. Theirs was the biggest victory of the round, enough to send them top after MatchDay 1.
They, however, succumbed to s second-half VOE renaissance on MatchDay 2, losing 4-3 to the newcomers. They shook off this defeat with a first away win of the season, against Atlantic Business. The momentum was strong enough to get them another victory on the road, this time at Beyond Limits, as they managed back-to-back victories on the road.
Going forward, they were unstoppable. Only once in their first 11 league games of the season did they fail to score 2+ goals. But by the end of the first half of the season, all those goals counted for little. With only one clean sheet in that run, they had slumped to fifth by December.
In the League Cup, Sporting Lagos did not hold back. They scored seven goals in their first three games. Despite losing their last two games, they still secured qualification for the knockout round.
Second Half of the Season
The new year came with a different Sporting Lagos. They picked up wins in their first two games without conceding a goal. But all that form went downhill as they lost to Real Sapphire before enduring a three-game run of draws in February.
Sporting Lagos roared back to life with a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Dino in the last week of the month. But the Lagosians relapsed yet again, enduring their worst month of the season in March.
Three losses on the bounce – v. Beyond Limits, v. Atlantic Business, and v. VOE – saw them slip down to and stay stuck in sixth. A 4-3 triumph over Dannaz on the Final Day was a good way to end the season. But it wasn’t enough to improve their circumstances as they finished the season in the same position.
Whatever luck Sporting Lagos had in the cup last season did not reflect this season. Their journey in the knockout phase was short-lived as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Gbagada.
